Banner Bags - Sustainable Design

CONTEXT

This was a side project that I worked on in 2016. I turned it into a small business, selling the bags by word of mouth and Instagram. I have put it on hold to focus on other projects, but would like to scale the business after I graduate.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Sketching, Conducting Primary & Secondary Research, Ideation, Prototyping (Paper, Muslin), Material Sourcing, Production, Marketing Strategy, Branding (Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign, Adobe Photoshop)

GOAL

Sustainable & ethical design, giving a second life to a widely used material that's destined for the landfill.

What if the products we use and throw away could have a second life?

Nylon street banners are everywhere. Cities, schools, festivals, and museums all market with these banners. They are frequently replaced, but difficult to recycle.

I intercept them on their way to the landfill,  and transform them into lightweight, reversible backpacks. This project began with the generous donation of 50 used street banners from the Richmond Parks Department.

Sustainable Fashion

One banner makes two reversible backpacks. Each one recycled, each one unique.
